Ownership & Funding

This page explains who owns Canada Edition, how we are funded, and what safeguards keep our editorial decisions independent. We want you to know exactly where our money comes from and who is responsible for the journalism you read. If you have a specific question about advertising, sponsorship, or our governance, you can jump to that section below.

How is Canada Edition funded?

Canada Edition is funded through a mix of display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. All revenue supports the newsroom, fact-checking, and editorial operations. No single funding source controls our coverage or dictates what we publish.

We clearly label any sponsored or commercial material. Affiliate links are disclosed within the article where they appear. Our commercial relationships never determine editorial conclusions, and we maintain a strict separation between the business team and the editorial team.

Who owns Canada Edition?

Canada Edition is owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation registered under business number 1003194827. The registered office is at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4, Canada. Northern Beacon Media Inc. is the sole owner of the publication and holds all publishing rights.

The company is privately held, and there is no external ownership stake that could influence editorial direction. Our ownership structure is straightforward: the corporation operates the site, funds the team, and is ultimately accountable for the publication’s compliance with Canadian law and journalistic standards.

How is editorial independence guaranteed?

Editorial independence is built into our governance. The Editor‑in‑Chief, Catherine Roy, has final authority over all editorial content, including story selection, corrections, and adherence to our journalistic standards. She reports to the board of Northern Beacon Media Inc., but no commercial or ownership interest can override her editorial decisions.

Our editorial policy explicitly states that advertisers, sponsors, and partners have no input into news coverage. Catherine Roy is the named person accountable for every piece of content, and you can reach her directly at catherine.roy@canadaedition.org or +1 416 555 0221. For more details about the rest of the editorial team, see our Our Team page.

How this works in practice

Consider a sponsored article about a new financial planning tool. A commercial partner pays for the content to be created, and the article is labelled “Sponsored” at the top and bottom. The topic is proposed by the partner, but our editors select the writer, review the draft, fact‑check every claim, and ensure the piece does not exaggerate benefits or omit risks. If the writer or fact‑checkers find the partner’s claims unsubstantiated, the article is either revised or not published. The partner cannot demand changes after publication, and any corrections are handled by our corrections policy. That is how we protect editorial independence while accepting commercial support.

For a full explanation of how we handle sponsored and affiliate content, please read our Sponsored Content Policy and Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure.
