Privacy Policy

This page explains how Canada Edition, owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., handles your personal information. It is written for readers who visit our website canadaedition.org or interact with us by email or phone. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your data in line with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). If you have questions at any point, you can reach our privacy team directly at privacy@canadaedition.org.

What personal data do we collect from you?

We collect only the information you choose to provide or that is generated by your use of our site. This typically includes your name and email address when you subscribe to our newsletter (via /about-us/newsletter/), contact us through info@canadaedition.org or tips@canadaedition.org, or submit a letter to the editor. If you call our main line at +1 416 555 0210 or the editorial line at +1 416 555 0220, we may log the date and nature of the inquiry but not record calls without consent.

When you browse canadaedition.org, our systems automatically collect technical data: your IP address, browser type, device operating system, pages viewed, and the date and time of each visit. We also use cookies and similar tracking technologies for analytics, site functionality, and advertising — all of which are detailed in our /about-us/cookie-policy/. We do not collect sensitive personal data such as health information, political opinions, or financial account details unless you voluntarily provide them in a direct communication (for example, in a tip to Kevin Sullivan at kevin.sullivan@canadaedition.org).

Why do we collect your data, and what is our lawful basis?

We collect personal data only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the context of operating a digital news publication. This includes processing newsletter subscriptions, responding to reader inquiries, verifying tips and sources, managing complaints (as outlined in our /complaints-procedure/), and improving our content and user experience. Our lawful basis under PIPEDA is your consent — which you give by providing your information or by continuing to use our site after reviewing this policy — as well as our legitimate interest in delivering trustworthy Canadian journalism.

Specifically, we use your email to send you the Canada Edition newsletter if you have subscribed via /about-us/newsletter/. You can withdraw that consent at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any newsletter email. Technical data helps us understand which stories — from Marc Tremblay’s daily newsroom coverage to Hannah Walsh’s municipal affairs reporting — resonate most with readers. We do not use your data for automated decision-making or profiling that significantly affects you.

How long do we keep your information?

We retain your personal data only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, or as required by Canadian law. Newsletter subscriber data is kept for the duration of your subscription plus a reasonable period afterward (typically 12 months) in case you re-subscribe. Correspondence sent to our editorial team, including tips or complaints forwarded to Andrew Leblanc at andrew.leblanc@canadaedition.org, is retained for up to three years to allow for follow-up and record-keeping. Analytics and log data are anonymised or deleted after 26 months.

When we no longer need your information, we delete it securely or irreversibly anonymise it. Northern Beacon Media Inc. retains no data beyond what is strictly necessary for the operation of our site, which is based in Canada and subject to Canadian jurisdiction.

Do we share your personal data with anyone?

We never sell your personal data to third parties. Period. We may share limited information with trusted service providers who help us operate Canada Edition — such as email delivery platforms, analytics providers, and hosting services — but only under strict contractual agreements that require them to protect your data and use it solely for the services they provide. We do not share your data with advertisers or commercial partners directly; any anonymised audience data used for advertising or sponsored content (as described in our /advertising-affiliate-disclosure/) is aggregated and does not identify you personally.

We may disclose personal information if required by law, a court order, or a request from a Canadian regulatory authority. If we ever partnered with another entity or sold all or part of Northern Beacon Media Inc., your data would be transferred only under terms that maintain this same level of protection. For complete transparency, our /ownership-funding/ page details all commercial relationships that support our work.

What are your rights, and how can you exercise them?

Under PIPEDA, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to challenge its accuracy, and to withdraw your consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, send an email to privacy@canadaedition.org with the subject line “Privacy Request.” We will acknowledge your request within 48 hours and respond substantively within 30 days. There is no charge for making a request, and we will not discriminate against you for doing so.

You can also ask us to delete your data, restrict processing, or provide a copy in a portable format. If you withdraw consent for newsletter emails, we will process that unsubscription immediately through the automated link in every email. If you believe we have mishandled your information, you have the right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at https://www.priv.gc.ca/. We encourage you to contact us first so we can resolve any concern directly.

Who is responsible for your data at Canada Edition?

The data controller for all personal information collected through canadaedition.org is Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation (Ontario Business Registry number 1003194827). Our registered office is Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4, Canada. Catherine Roy, Editor-in-Chief, oversees editorial standards and data handling practices. For privacy-specific matters, you can reach our designated privacy contact at privacy@canadaedition.org or by mail at the registered office address above, marked “Privacy Office.”

We have trained our team — including Jessica Morin in provincial affairs and our newsdesk staff — on PIPEDA principles. Andrew Leblanc, as Standards Lead, also oversees data accuracy in our fact-checking and corrections processes (see /fact-checking-policy/). No one outside Northern Beacon Media Inc. has direct access to your personal data except our authorised processors.

How this works in practice

Imagine you email tips@canadaedition.org with a story suggestion about a community event in your neighbourhood. Kevin Sullivan, our Community Correspondent, receives your email, which includes your name and contact details. He reads your tip but does not share your email with anyone outside the newsroom. After the story is published, your personal data remains in our secure email system for three years, accessible only to editorial staff who need it for follow-up fact-checking. If you later decide you do not want us to keep that email, you write to privacy@canadaedition.org, and we permanently delete your message and any associated metadata within 10 business days. At no point is your information sold, traded, or used for marketing without your explicit consent.

In short

Canada Edition collects only what you give us, never sells it, and keeps it only as long as it serves a clear purpose. You are in control — you can access, correct, or delete your data anytime by writing to privacy@canadaedition.org. We are here to earn your trust, one story at a time.
